How to Plan Skirting Boards Around Uneven Floors and Walls

Older homes rarely have perfectly straight walls or level floors. Before you cut MDF skirting to length, check the room as it really is. A little planning can prevent awkward gaps and wasted boards.

Check the room before ordering

Measure each wall at skirting height and note door openings, chimney breasts, alcoves and any pipework. Use a straightedge to spot bows in the wall and a level to identify changes in the floor. Mark the biggest gaps on a sketch. Allow for cuts and mistakes rather than ordering exactly the measured perimeter.

Decide on the floor finish first

If new flooring is planned, confirm its finished height and the installer's required expansion gap. Skirting can cover the perimeter gap, but it should not pin a floating floor down. Where skirting is being fitted before carpet, agree the carpet clearance with the fitter rather than guessing.

Work with wavy walls

Offer the board up dry before applying adhesive or fixing it. A slight bow can sometimes be pulled into place with suitable fixings into a sound substrate; a large hollow may need wall repair or packing. Do not rely on a thick bead of decorator's caulk to hide a major gap. Check for cables and pipes before drilling or nailing.

Handle an uneven floor

A small, consistent gap may be less noticeable once the room is furnished, but a large changing gap usually needs a better fit. Scribing transfers the floor's contour onto the bottom of the skirting so it can be trimmed carefully. Practise on an offcut, work slowly, and keep enough board height for a balanced look.

Plan the visible joints

Dry-fit corners and long runs before fixing. Put joints where they are less prominent and avoid very short pieces beside a doorway if a different cutting plan can prevent them. Follow the skirting profile's shape when making an internal corner joint; a simple mitre is not always the best answer on out-of-square walls.

Finish without hiding problems

Once the board is securely fixed, fill fixing holes and small wall-to-skirting gaps with products suitable for the surfaces and expected movement. Seal exposed MDF cut edges before painting according to the coating manufacturer's instructions. If there is damp or movement in the wall, resolve the cause before fitting new trim.
