Why Corner Joints Matter
Getting the corners right is the difference between a professional skirting board installation and one that looks amateur within months. As timber and MDF expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, poorly chosen or poorly cut joints will open up, leaving unsightly gaps. Understanding when to mitre and when to cope is an essential skill for any installer.
The Two Main Corner Techniques
Mitre Joints (External Corners)
A mitre joint is formed by cutting both pieces of skirting at a 45° angle so they meet neatly at the corner. Mitre joints are the standard method for external corners — where the wall projects outward into the room, such as around a chimney breast or bay window reveal.
How to cut a mitre joint:
- Set your mitre saw to 45°.
- Cut the first piece so the face side is longer than the back.
- Cut the second piece as a mirror image.
- Test fit, adjust if needed, then fix and fill the joint with flexible filler.
Pros: Quick to cut, clean appearance when tight, works well on external corners.
Cons: Any movement in the wall or timber will open the joint visibly. Not suitable for internal corners.
Cope Joints (Internal Corners)
A cope joint (also called scribing) is used for internal corners — the most common type in a standard room. Rather than mitring both pieces, one piece runs straight into the corner, and the second piece is cut to follow the profile of the first, overlapping it.
How to cut a cope joint:
- Fix the first length of skirting hard into the corner, running it straight.
- On the second piece, cut a 45° mitre as if you were making an internal mitre — this reveals the profile of the skirting on the face.
- Use a coping saw to cut along the profile line revealed by the mitre cut, undercutting slightly (angling the saw back at around 5°) so only the face edge makes contact.
- Test fit against the first piece and refine with a file or sandpaper until the joint is tight.
Pros: Far more durable than an internal mitre — any movement in the boards tightens the joint rather than opening it. The professional standard for internal corners.
Cons: Takes more skill and time to cut accurately, especially on complex profiles like Ogee or Torus.
Internal Mitre vs Cope: Which Is Better?
Many DIYers default to mitring internal corners because it seems simpler, but this is a mistake. Internal mitres will almost always open up over time as the boards move. A well-cut cope joint is invisible and permanent. Always cope internal corners.
Tips for Tight Joints on MDF Skirting
- MDF is more stable than timber — it expands and contracts less, so internal mitres are slightly more forgiving on MDF than on softwood. That said, coping is still best practice.
- Undercut your cope — angling the coping saw back ensures only the face edge contacts the adjoining board, giving a tighter fit even on slightly out-of-square walls.
- Use flexible decorator's caulk — after fixing, run a fine bead of caulk along any small gaps and smooth with a damp finger before painting. This accommodates minor movement.
- Check your corners are square — most aren't. Use an angle finder or digital protractor to measure the actual corner angle and adjust your mitre saw accordingly.
- Pre-prime before fitting — prime all faces and edges before installation, then apply a finish coat after fitting and filling.
