Should Skirting Boards Match the Walls or Doors? A Colour Guide

White skirting boards are a classic choice, but they are not the only way to finish a room. If you are planning a colour scheme, decide how the skirting, architrave and doors should relate before ordering and painting. Here are three approaches that work well in UK homes.

1. Match skirting boards to the walls

Painting the skirting the same colour as the wall creates a continuous look. It can make the joinery less prominent and let furniture, artwork or panelling take centre stage. This works particularly well with deep green, navy or warm terracotta walls. Use a suitable finish for woodwork so the skirting can cope with everyday knocks and cleaning, even when the colour matches the wall paint.

2. Match skirting to the doors and architraves

This is the most familiar look: the skirting runs into the architrave, with doors and trim painted in the same shade. A crisp white trim can frame coloured walls; a soft off-white often feels gentler against warm neutrals. Check the profile as well as the colour. A simple square-edge skirting alongside an ornate architrave may look accidental unless that contrast is intentional.

3. Make the skirting a deliberate contrast

Darker skirting can anchor a pale room, while a bright colour can add personality to a hallway or children's bedroom. Try a painted sample beside the flooring and at the base of the wall, not just at eye level. Daylight and artificial light can change how a colour looks.

What about the floor?

Skirting is wall trim, not flooring trim. It does not need to match a timber or laminate floor. Choose a colour that works with both surfaces, and check a sample at the junction where wall, floor and skirting meet.

Before you paint

Confirm whether your MDF skirting and architraves arrive primed or unprimed, and follow the finish manufacturer's preparation advice. Seal exposed cut edges appropriately, fill fixing holes, sand smooth and test your chosen topcoat on an offcut. For a cohesive finish, consider using the same profile family across skirting and architraves.
