Renovating two rooms at once can make ordering MDF skirting boards and architraves more efficient, but only if you plan the individual cuts. Adding up the total metres is a useful starting point, not a complete shopping list.
A cutting plan helps you spot which offcuts can be reused, which pieces need a full board and where a little spare material will prevent delays. Here is a practical way to organise your order.
Measure each run separately
Make a simple sketch of each room and label every wall run. Record door openings, alcoves, chimney breasts and short returns. Measure the actual surfaces rather than relying on estate-agent floor plans.
For architraves, list each upright and head separately. Note your intended joint arrangement and any extra material needed for mitres. Confirm measurements before making final cuts.
Group matching products together
Only combine cutting plans for boards with the same profile, dimensions and finish. Two pieces may both be MDF skirting but still have different heights, thicknesses or moulded details.
Keep primed and unprimed requirements separate. If matching existing joinery, compare the full profile and measurements, not just its name.
Use the actual supplied board length
Many Univers skirting and architrave products are supplied in 3050mm lengths. Check the listing for the exact product you are ordering. Traditional Window Boards have 1500mm and 3050mm length options, so choose the correct variant rather than assuming one standard length for every item.
For example, two finished pieces measuring 1800mm and 1100mm total 2900mm. They may fit within a 3050mm board, provided the remaining allowance is sufficient for saw cuts, end trimming and the joint details. Two 1600mm pieces total 3200mm and cannot come from one 3050mm board, even before allowing for cuts.
Plan the longest pieces first
Allocate long, uninterrupted runs before short returns. Then look for smaller pieces that can be cut from the remaining material. This is more useful than applying a fixed waste percentage without checking whether your required lengths fit.
A simple table can record the board number, planned pieces and expected remainder. Keep each room's labels on the plan so that similar pieces are not mixed up.
Allow for the saw and the joints
Every cut removes material. The width depends on your blade and cutting setup, so use the allowance appropriate to your tools rather than a universal figure. Mitres, damaged ends and final adjustments can also use more material than a basic wall measurement suggests.
Follow your tool manufacturer's instructions, support long boards securely and use appropriate dust extraction and personal protective equipment when cutting MDF.
Keep useful offcuts, not every offcut
Label usable leftovers by profile, dimensions and finish. Store them flat, supported and dry. Short pieces may be useful for returns or test cuts, but do not rely on an offcut until its length and condition have been checked.
A test piece can help you check a corner angle or paint finish before working on a full-length board.
Order spare material based on the job
There is no single extra percentage that suits every renovation. Straightforward rooms, numerous alcoves and complicated corners create different cutting demands. Allow spare material for mistakes and adjustments, especially if this is your first installation.
Before ordering, review the plan with your installer. Confirm that your quantities cover the proposed cuts rather than just the total wall length.
Keep window boards on a separate schedule
Window boards need their own length, depth and projection measurements. At Univers, window boards over 250mm wide are supplied unprimed only. Check the available width, thickness, length and finish combination for each opening.
Do not treat a short window-board offcut as interchangeable with decorative skirting or architrave.
Your final order check
- Every room and opening has been measured.
- Profiles, sizes and finishes are grouped correctly.
- Supplied lengths match the selected product variants.
- Each planned board accommodates the cuts and trimming allowances.
- Spare material reflects the complexity of the job.
- Delivery or collection arrangements are confirmed.
