Introduction
Getting your measurements right before ordering a door frame set is essential. A few minutes with a tape measure will save you time, money, and frustration. Here's exactly what to measure and how.
Tools You'll Need
- Steel tape measure
- Pencil and notepad
- Spirit level (to check if the opening is square)
Step 1 — Measure the Door Width
Measure the width of the door leaf itself (not the opening). Standard UK door widths are 686mm, 762mm, or 838mm. Your frame set should match the door width.
Step 2 — Measure the Door Height
Standard UK door height is 1981mm. Measure from the floor to the top of the opening to confirm.
Step 3 — Measure the Wall Thickness
This determines the rebate depth you need. Measure the thickness of the wall/door lining — typically 95mm, 107mm, or 133mm for standard UK stud walls.
Step 4 — Check the Opening is Square
Measure diagonally corner to corner in both directions. If the measurements match, the opening is square. If not, you'll need to pack the frame during installation.
Step 5 — Note the Swing Direction
Decide if the door swings left or right — this affects which way the frame is oriented.
