Why Matching Profiles Matters
Skirting boards and architraves are the framing elements of a room. When they share the same profile, they create a visual rhythm that ties the space together — walls, floors, and doorways all feel intentional and cohesive. Mismatched profiles, on the other hand, can make even a well-decorated room feel unfinished.
The Golden Rule: Same Profile, Different Width
The most reliable approach is to use the same profile for both your skirting board and architrave, but in different widths. Your skirting board will typically be taller (95mm–166mm), while your architrave will be narrower (69mm is standard). This creates harmony without making the room feel heavy.
For example:
- Torus skirting (120mm) paired with Torus architrave (69mm) — classic and timeless
- Ogee skirting (95mm) paired with Ogee architrave (69mm) — elegant and traditional
- Square Edge skirting (144mm) paired with Square Edge architrave (69mm) — clean and contemporary
Matching by Interior Style
Contemporary & Modern Interiors
Go for clean, minimal profiles — Square Edge, Pencil Round, or Chamfer Round. These work beautifully in open-plan spaces, new builds, and Scandinavian-inspired interiors. Pair with tall skirting (144mm or 166mm) for a bold, architectural statement.
Traditional & Period Interiors
Torus and Ogee are the classic choices for Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian-style homes. Both profiles have gentle curves that echo original period joinery. Pair with a 120mm or 144mm skirting height for authenticity.
Transitional Interiors
If your home blends old and new, Ovolo or Lambs Tongue offer a middle ground — enough detail to feel considered, but clean enough to work in modern settings.
What About Grooved Profiles?
Profiles like V Groove, One Square Groove, and Two Square Groove add subtle texture and depth. These work particularly well in hallways and living rooms where you want a little more visual interest. Match your architrave to the same groove profile for a fully coordinated look.
Primed or Unprimed — Does It Affect Matching?
No — the finish (primed or unprimed) doesn't affect how profiles match visually. Both will be painted the same colour on site. We recommend primed boards if you want to save time on preparation, or unprimed if you prefer full control over the base coat.
