Introduction
Installing an MDF door frame set is a straightforward DIY task that can transform the look of any room. Whether you're replacing old timber frames or fitting out a new build, moisture-resistant MDF is the ideal choice for UK homes — durable, easy to paint, and resistant to humidity.
What You'll Need
- MDF door frame set (head and two legs)
- Mitre saw or hand saw
- Spirit level
- Wood adhesive and finishing nails
- Caulk and decorator's filler
- Sandpaper (120 grit)
- Tape measure and pencil
Step 1 — Measure Your Door Opening
Measure the width and height of the door opening. Standard UK door openings are 762mm x 1981mm or 838mm x 1981mm. Add 10mm clearance on each side for the frame rebate.
Step 2 — Cut the Head Piece
Cut the horizontal head piece to the width of the door opening plus the thickness of both leg pieces. Use a mitre saw for a clean, square cut.
Step 3 — Cut the Leg Pieces
Cut both vertical legs to the height of the door opening. Check they're equal length before fitting.
Step 4 — Dry Fit First
Always dry fit the frame before applying adhesive. Check it's square using a spirit level and adjust as needed.
Step 5 — Fix the Frame
Apply wood adhesive to the back of each piece and press firmly into position. Secure with finishing nails every 400mm. Punch nails below the surface.
Step 6 — Fill and Finish
Fill nail holes and any gaps with decorator's filler. Once dry, sand smooth and apply your chosen paint finish.
