Why Skirting Board Height Matters
Choosing the right skirting board height is one of the most important decisions when finishing a room. Too short and it looks lost against the wall; too tall and it can overwhelm a smaller space. Getting it right creates a polished, proportional finish that complements your interior.
Standard Skirting Board Heights
As a general rule of thumb:
- 100mm–145mm — ideal for standard rooms with ceiling heights of 2.4m
- 145mm–195mm — suits rooms with ceiling heights of 2.4m–2.7m
- 195mm–220mm — perfect for period properties or rooms with ceiling heights above 2.7m
Consider Your Ceiling Height
The most reliable method is to use a ratio. A skirting board height of around 1/16th of the ceiling height works well in most rooms. For example, a 2.4m ceiling suits a 150mm skirting board, while a 3m ceiling suits a 190mm board.
Room Size and Style
In smaller rooms, taller skirting boards can actually make the space feel grander — especially when paired with matching architraves. In open-plan spaces, consistency is key: use the same height throughout to create a seamless flow.
