How do I prevent MDF skirting boards from swelling and absorbing paint at the edges?
Edge swelling and paint absorption are the most common problems with standard MDF skirting boards. At Univers Skirting & Architrave, we've spent years developing solutions to this exact issue — starting with the board itself.
Why do MDF edges swell and absorb paint?
Standard MDF is highly porous, particularly at cut edges. When moisture or water-based paint contacts an unsealed edge, the fibres absorb liquid and swell — causing bubbling, raised grain, and an uneven finish that's difficult to correct once painted.
Step 1: Start with moisture-resistant MDF
Univers Skirting & Architrave manufactures all skirting boards from moisture-resistant MDF — a denser, more stable board that significantly reduces edge absorption compared to standard MDF. This is our baseline specification across all profiles, including Torus, Ogee, Bullnose, Pencil Round, and Ovolo.
Step 2: Seal the edges before priming
- Apply a dedicated MDF edge sealer or neat PVA diluted 50/50 with water to all cut edges
- Allow to dry fully (minimum 2 hours)
- Lightly sand with 240-grit paper once dry
- Repeat for a second coat if the edge is still visibly absorbing
Step 3: Use a solvent-based primer on edges
Water-based primers can reactivate swelling even on sealed edges. For best results, apply a solvent-based primer (such as Zinsser BIN or equivalent) to edges specifically, then use your preferred water-based topcoat system on the face.
Step 4: Consider factory-primed boards
The most reliable way to prevent edge swelling is to choose factory-primed skirting boards from Univers Skirting & Architrave. Our factory priming process seals edges under controlled conditions before the boards leave our Gosport workshop — eliminating the risk of on-site swelling entirely.
Summary
To prevent MDF skirting board edges from swelling: use moisture-resistant MDF, seal edges with PVA or MDF sealer, prime with a solvent-based primer, and consider factory-primed boards for a guaranteed result.
